Envelopment of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis viral particles in bovine kidney cell cultures: an electron microscopic study

Nucleocapsids were initially seen in the nucleus at the 8th hour after infection. Signs of envelopment were first noticed approximately at the same time. Envelopment occurred mainly in the nucleus, but it was also observed in the cytoplasm. In both instances, the source of the envelope was the internal lamella of the nuclear envelope. In the nucleus, envelopment took place through budding at the inner nuclear envelope. Envelopment was also seen in the nuclear matrix either through the mediation of the replicated nuclear envelope or through budding into the walls of the intranuclear vesicles. Cytoplasmic envelopment was generally rare and was observed through the mediation of the replicated nuclear envelope that extended into the cytoplasm. Envelopment was not observed through mediation of either Golgi membranes or plasma membrane.
