The isolation and transmission of the virus of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis-infectious pustular vulvo-vaginitis

In a herd of 50 Ayrshire cows, four out of nine served by a bull which, six months previously, had shown clinical evidence of a balano-posthitis, developed oedema of the vulva, and eight of the nine showed serum neutralising antibodies to IBR/IPV virus. IBR/IPV virus was isolated from the semen of the bull and from the vaginal mucus of one of the cows, and the virus was transmitted successfully to two bulls and two heifers. In each case the infection was transient. Distinctive seminal changes were present in the semen of the bull infected originally.
