Bovine herpes mammillitis virus and vulvo-vaginitis

The course of an experimental infection with bovine herpes mammillitis virus in a 1st-calf Friesian heifer is described. In addition to vesicle and lesion formation on the teats and udder skin, ulcerated lesions appeared on the vulvo-vaginal musoca by day 7 post-inoculation. Suggested causes of these vulvo-vaginal lesions are: direct extension from escutcheon lesions (which were apparent at the same time); indirect infection via contaminated straw bedding; and, less probably, haematogenous spread from the teat and udder lesions. Rapid healing of the teats and udder was in progress by day 9 post-infection, and complete resolution of genital lesions had occurred by day 16.
