A herpesvirus designated '69/1 LO' was isolated in Italy from an ulcerative lesion in the oral mucosa of a calf that had died from alimentary tract troubles. On the basis of serological studies and the response of cattle and laboratory animals to experimental infection, it was concluded that the isolate possessed the characteristics of bovine herpes mammillitis virus. This is the first report on the isolation of this virus from a European country other than Great Britain.
