Demonstration of bovine syncytial viral antigen in bovine lymphocyte cultures by immunofluorescence

Phytohaemagglutinin-treated lymphocyte cultures of cattle from a herd infected with bovine syncytial virus (see V.B. 42, abst. 128) were examined by the FA technique. Viral antigen was detected in cultured lumphocytes from 8 to 13 cattle that were 1.5 to 11 years old. This technique for detecting carrier cattle seemed reliable since cultures from 7 of 8 test-positive cattle yielded the virus when cocultivated with indicator bovine embryonic spleen cell cultures.
