Pharmacological study of tenicidal properties of two anthelmintic benzimidazole derivatives: mebendazole and flubendazole

Mice experimentally infected with Hymenolepis nana var. fraterna were treated with mebendazole or flubendazole. For comparison, a 3rd group received niclosamide. All the drugs were given at 200 mg/kg body-weight. 43 of 62, 31 of 67 and 103 of 106 mice, respectively, were freed from the parasites. In a 2nd experiment, infected mice were given mebendazole or flubendazole once a day for 4 days at total doses from 25 to 200 mg/kg. Mebendazole was the most effective, a dose of 50 mg/kg eliminating the cestodes from 18 of 20 animals. [In the table, the data for the 2 drugs in the 2nd experiment appear to be transposed].
