Critical tests of the benzimidazole anthelmintic, fenbendazole, in the horse

Critical tests of fenbendazole given via stomach tube indicated that at 5mg/kg body-weight the drug removed from 7 horses averages of 100% Strongylus vulgaris, 99% S. edentatus, 87% S. equinus, 92% small strongyles, 100% mature Oxyuris equi, 50% immature O. equi, 86% mature Parascaris equorum and 3% immature P. equorum. At 3.5mg/kg the percentages removed from one horse and one pony were S. vulgaris 100, S. edentatus 94, small strongyles 86 and mature O. equi 100. Neither dose rate was active against Anoplocephala spp., Trichostrongylus axei or Habronema muscae. No signs of toxicity were observed.
