The results of using flexion tests during horse purchase examination of 142 animals including 81 Thoroughbreds or Thoroughbred crosses, 40 ponies and 21 others (73 males, 69 females), is reported. A flexion test was carried out on each limb for 1.5 minutes using moderate pressure with a 'lameness limitation line' of 25 m. 73 (51.4%) of the horses passed the examination. In 35 of the 69 failures, the main, but not necessarily the only, reason was the degree of failure elicited in the flexion tests.
