Critical tests of oxfendazole against internal parasites of horses

Doses of 0.22-100 mg/kg oxfendazole were tested on 44 young horses and one pony naturally infected with helminths and bots. Faecal egg counts were made and PM examinations carried out 4-7 days after treatment. Efficacy was similar whether a powder was given by stomach tube or pellets were mixed in feed. Despite individual variations, effective doses (up to 100% removal of parasites) appeared to be as follows: Strongylus vulgaris and S. edentatus (0.55 mg/kg), S. equinus (10 mg/kg), small strongyles (10 mg/kg), adult and immature Parascaris equorum (10 mg/kg), mature Oxyuris equi (1.1 mg/kg), immature O. equi (10 mg/kg). The drug was ineffective against 2nd and 3rd instars of Gasterophilus intestinalis and G. nasalis, 4th and 5th stage S. vulgaris in aneurysms and Trichostrongylus axei, Habronema muscae, Draschia megastoma and Strongyloides westeri. Toxicosis was not observed at dose rates below 25 mg/kg.
