The use of mebendazole as a broad-spectrum anthelmintic in Rhodesia

After testing mebendazole on 25 baboons (Papio ursinus) with intestinal nematodes and curing all 25 of all infections; with no side effects, the drug was given to 102 human patients with a variety of helminths (Ternidens deminutus, Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides, Strongyloides stercoralis, Trichuris trichiura, Hymenolepis nana, Taenia saginata and Moniliformis moniliformis). For E. vermicularis, one dose of 100 mg mebendazole was given; for the remainder, 100 mg was given twice daily for 3 days. The cure rate was almost 100% for all but H. nana where only 6 of the 15 patients treated were cured. Side effects were completely absent.
