In 1971 the disease was diagnosed in Hong Kong. Numerous outbreaks occurred in 1972-73 in Britain. Outbreaks have occurred also in France, Italy, Austria, Poland, Belgium and Germany. A review of the disease with features aiding differential diagnosis was published in 1973 by FAO. Among those mentioned were: growth of the virus in different tissue culture systems (the virus does not grow in tissue of bovine origin), resistance of the virus to pH 5.0 and its stabilization by M MgCl2 against heating at 50 deg C, demonstration of specific CF and neutralization between new strains and reference antiserum, and failure to infect cattle. Recommendations were made regarding eradication, movements of animals, use of swill, and choice of disinfectants. The disease appears to be confined at present to Europe.
