At relative humidities higher than 55%, the virus of swine vesicular disease (SVD) was stable in free aerosols and in captured aerosols on microthreads outdoors. If slurry from SVD-infected premises were to be sprayed over farmland, spread of disease might occur-but only if the concentration of virus in the slurry was high and if susceptible animals inhaled an infective dose. Epidemiological data do not support the theory that spread by this means is common. Several laboratory workers were infected during the course of this work-probably by inhalation-but farm workers do not become infected during outbreaks of SVD.
