Isolation of a non-haemadsorbing strain of African swine fever (ASF) virus from a natural outbreak of the disease

In an outbreak of African swine fever in the Transvaal 122 pigs out of about 150 died within nine days. The diagnosis was confirmed histologically and by immunofluorescence, but suspensions prepared from various organs of affected animals were negative in haemadsorption tests, and lysis of cells occurred in buffy coat cell cultures. The strain also produced cytopathic effects in 48-72 hours in LLC-MK2 tissue culture cells. No contaminating virus particles which could have caused this cytopathic effect were seen with the electron microscope, and it is thought that this was a true non-haemadsorbing strain of the virus not normally found in nature.
