The bovine viral diarrhoea strain had undergone 11 passages in calf kidney cells. Three of a litter of 5 piglets were injected i/m with the virus at 12 days of age. Five days later, virus aerosol was sprayed into the nose; this was repeated three weeks later. Analogous titres to the bovine and porcine viruses developed in the serum. When all five piglets were inoculated with virulent swine fever virus 25 days after the primary immunization, the immunized piglets survived.
