Muscle tissue was obtained by biopsy from 6 female wild swine, kept in a pen of restricted size for 10 weeks, and from 6 German Landrace females, trained for 8 weeks by daily exercise on a moving belt. The former had more fibres of type IIA and fewer of type IIB than the latter. However, the proportion of fibre types was unaffected by exercise or the lack of it, and seemed to be determined by genetic factors. The hypertrophy resulting from training affected type I fibres more than type II.
