With reference to an observation of metaphyseai dysplasia in a 54-year-old woman, the authors review the clinical and radiological symptomatology of metaphyseal dysplasia of which there are two types, Pyle's metaphyseal dysplasia and Jackson's cranio-metaphyseal dysplasia. The two types are described in detail, together with a discussion of the problems of differential diagnosis, particularly from the radiological point of view. Pyle's metaphyseal dysplasia does not usually pose many difficult problems of differential diagnosis; this is not so of cranio-metaphyseal dysplasia which can be confused with Albers-Schonberg disease, Spranger and Roy's dysostoscierosis, Rajic and Weber's oculo-dento-osteodysplasia, Melnick and Needles' osteodysplasia, or Pronto-metaphyseal dysplasia. The elements of differential diagnosis between these diseases are studied in detail.
