The workshop took place in Brasilia, in November 1978. This publication contains the papers presented and summarizes the workshop discussions. The concept of integrated rural development in relation to Latin America was considered, and the roles of community participation, educational planning methodology and rural education were discussed. It was concluded that education should be an integral part of rural development and should encourage community participation. It should be oriented towards the improvement of rural living conditions, while respecting and encouraging community culture and values, and curricula should be based on community interests and problems. Educational planning should be multidisciplinary, and at the local level wherever possible.
