In line with its activities in socio-demographic aspects of rural development, the FAO undertook a planner's training programme from 1979 to 1981, entitled "Population and rural and agricultural planning". The present report discusses the events of the first workshop which was held in May, 1979 in Cameroon and gathered together planners active in 12 French tropical African countries. Included are summaries of 11 case studies presented at the seminar and then used as the basis for discussions and training workshops. Outlines of the theoretical courses are also given along with a review of the conclusions drawn by participants about possible applications in the field of planning of views raised at the conference.
