The document presents a 'module' for teaching population studies as related to agricultural and rural development. It is divided into two main parts, the first of a macro-economic and the second of a micro-economic character. (A) At the collective level an attempt is made to show the mechanisms which change the dimensions and structures of a population and its work force, and how the agricultural economy and the process of rural development are affected by the fact that the populations are heterogeneous (each of the different demographic and socioeconomic categories having its own role, regulation, interests and behaviour) and by the fact that populations change (in their sizes and structures) over time. (B) At the family level, an attempt is made to show that economic behaviour (work, production, use of income) and demographic behaviour (marriage, procreation, migration) cannot be explained or forecast independently of each other. The actual examples chosen to illustrate the themes presented relate wherever possible to Francophone Africa.
