The demographic variables discussed in the paper do not cover all the potentially relevant variables but are restricted to those currently used particularly in connection with the FAO Country Perspective Studies for Agricultural Development. Moreover, the methodology or approach for incorporating these variables in these studies, including the consideration of alternative population trends, is simple in the sense that the exercise essentially consists of an analysis of the implications of demographic trends on agricultural development. The rather complex inverse relationship is not considered explicitly. In view of this the discussion of the role of the demographic variables is limited to the manner in which they enter into the calculation or considerations of the various targets or projection that form part of the framework of a planning or perspective study ror agricultural development. Even within this narrow objective, the role of the demographic variables is shown to be considerable.
