In this overview, methodological approaches to experimental manipulation of iron, the link between iron and microglia and the importance of microgliosis as an aspect of neurodegeneration are discussed. The literature on each of the neurodegenerative diseases in which iron has been implicated is then reviewed to evaluate the evidence for a causal role of iron in each of these diseases.
