Strains of Clostridium spp. (89) were isolated from various pathologial material, foods and soil. On the basis of cultural, biochemical reactions and gas liquid chromatography of metabolites, 70 strains were identified as C. perfringens type A. All strains produced lecithinase C, gelatinase and hydrogen sulfide; while none of them fermented mannitol and dulcitol. More than 90% of strains showed hemolysis on agar containing rabbit erythrocytes. Among 68 strains of C. perfringens type A, only 22 (30, 23%) could be serotyped.
