Biological behaviour of Clostridium perfringens type A strains

Sporulating cell extract (CE) of 61 out of 72 strains of C. perfringens type A exhibited fluid accumulation in the ligated ileum of rabbits and erythema in the depilated guinea pig skin. CE of 5 strains caused only fluid accumulation in the rabbit ileum and that of one, erythema only in the guinea pig skin. Two Hobbs and 3 Indian strains of C. perfringens were inactive in these 2 biological tests. Immunodiffusion tests detected the presence of enterotoxin in CE of all but 2 biologically positive strains and 3 of 5 biologically negative strains. The majority of the Indian strains were exterotoxigenic.
