Clostridium perfringens type E enterotoxaemia in rabbits

An outbreak of enteritis in laboratory rabbits characterized by profuse watery diarrhoea and death within a few hours is described. PM examination revealed distension and inflammation of the caecum with epithelial necrosis and eosinophilic infiltration. In tests for enterotoxins, mice and rabbits injected with caecal samples developed nervous signs and died in 7-24 hours. Toxin neutralization tests with specific antisera suggested that the enterotoxaemia was caused by C. perfringens type E.
