Four pairs of calves were given live, modified, temperature-sensitive virus vaccine at 72, 48, 24 or 0 hours before being placed with 5 unvaccinated calves and 4 calves which had been challenged with virulent IBR virus 72 hours previously. They were kept together and evaluated clinically for the next 11 days. All 4 challenged calves exhibited typical IBR as did all 5 control calves. The calves vaccinated 72 and 48 hours before challenge remained clinically normal. One animal challenged 24 hours after vaccination remained normal, the other showed mild signs of the disease. Those challenged immediately after vaccination had raised temperature and signs of the infection but to a lesser extent than controls.
