The efficacy of metergoline in preventing or suppressing puerperal lactation was evaluated in 1323 women studied in 44 hospitals in Italy. Treatment with metergoline at 4 mg 3 times daily for 5 days prevented or suppressed mammary activity completely in 88.5% of 1119 cases; in the remaining 11.5% of women, a further identical course of treatment was effective. Plasma prolactin concn., evaluated in 90 women, were significantly decreased (P < 0.01) by the 5-day treatment with metergoline. The drug was well-tolerated, with a low incidence of side effects. It is concluded that metergoline is an active and well-tolerated drug for inhibition of puerperal lactation.
