Puerperal women (60) who did not wish to breast feed their newborns were treated with clomiphene citrate (100 mg daily for 5 days). Forty women received clomiphene starting on the 1st day post partum while 20 were treated starting on the 4th day, when lactation was well established. Clomiphene was effective in inhibiting as well as in suppressing puerperal lactation. Although a statistically significant decrease in serum prolactin was observed in the clomiphene-treated women, no significant difference in prolactin concentrations was detected between women receiving clomiphene and placebo treated ones. The suppressive effect of the drug on puerperal lactation should be exerted at a peripheral level.
