This article summarizes the physiological mechanisms controlling human lactation, including the physiology of prolactin secretion, nutritional and immunological aspects of lactation, lactational amenorrhoea and its demographic impact, suppression of lactation, relactation, and lactation and maternal/infant energy resource. It is stressed that human milk is being wasted as a vital economic resource, and that high priority should be assigned to human lactation.
