A comparative study of postpartum, puerperal and non-puerperal insertions on Lippes Loops

A comparative study was carried out at Queen Mary's Hospital, Lucknow, India between January 1964 and December 1968 in which 2403 Lippes loops were inserted 4-8 days postpartum, in the late puerperium, and in nonpuerperal women. Early postpartum insertion was easy and did not interfere with involution of the uterus. Expulsion of the device was the commonest complication and occurred in 26.4% of the woman inserted postpartum who reported for follow-up; this compared with a 9.4% expulsion rate in late puerperal insertions, and 14.2% in nonpuerperal insertions. Bleeding was the major complication in the nonpuerperal insertions but was not a serious problem in either the postpartum of the late puerperal groups. Late puerperal insertion presented the problem of getting women to come at the correct time. Postpartum insertion appears to be a worthwhile procedure as the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
