An epidemiological survey of human intestinal parasites in Vientiane, Laos

In Vientiane, Laos, 2,493 stool samples were examined in 1971 for parasites. 46.5% were found to be infected with Opisthorchis viverrini, 30.6% with hookworm, 13.7% with Strongyloides stercoralis, 49.9% with Trichuris trichiura, 0.2% with Enterobius vermicularis, 3.7% with Taenia sp., 2.9% with Hymenolepis nana, 49.3% with Ascaris lumbricoides and 1.1% with an echinostome. The results are analysed with respect to the age and sex of the hosts. The majority had mild helminth infections except for ascariasis which showed a high intensity. Epidemiology and chemotherapy are briefly discussed.
