A survey of gastro intestinal helminth parasites of stray dogs in Zaria, Nigeria

Seven species of helminths were found in the alimentary tracts of 180 stray dogs killed in the Zaria area of Nigeria. Dipylidium caninum occurred in 176 (97.8%), Taenia hydatigena in 122 (67.8%), Ancylostoma caninum in 118 (65.8%) Toxocara canis in 74 (41.1%), Taenia ovis in 63 (35%), Trichuris vulpis in 25 (13.9%), and Echinococcus granulosus in one. Infection rates by host sex and age are tabulated. Of 180 stray dogs examined in the Zaria area 65.6% (118) were positive for Ancylostoma caninum, while Toxocara canis and Trichuris vulpis were detected in 41.1% (74) and 13.9% (25) respectively. Other helminths found included Taenia ovis in 35% (63), Taenia hydatigena in 67.8% (122), Echinococcus granulosus in one and Dipylidium caninum in 97.8% (176).
