Faecal samples collected between August 1985 and March 1986 from inhabitants of Okitipupa (271 samples), Akure (831), Ifon (370) and Ajowa (130), in Ondo State, Nigeria, showed that Ascaris lumbricoides (43.1%), Trichuris trichiura (23.4%) and hookworms (17.0%) were the three most common helminths found. The 6-10 year and 11-15 year age groups had the highest infection levels and the over-25 year age group had the lowest. 8.8% of the infected samples had triple infections and 25.1% had double infections. A low prevalence of hookworm (2.1%) in Okitipupa, the nearest of the four areas to the sea (30 km), was attributed to the heavy soils of clay and silt coupled with heavy rain.
