Reasons for the current lack of reliable and comprehensive data on helminth incidence and intensity in humans in the USA are given. The relationships between clinical manifestations, worm burden and faecal egg counts are described. The need for true random sampling of a population is stressed, if statistically valid data are to be collected. The article is concluded with a brief and very general description of the present status of intestinal helminth infection in man in the USA.
