In West Virginia, USA, 37 (34%) of 108 rural children aged one to 6 years from poor, deprived families were found to have clinically significant intestinal parasite(s). Giardia lamblia occurred in 24, Ascaris lumbricoides in 17 and Trichuris trichiura in 3. Those children with Giardia-positive stools were significantly smaller than those without.
