Intestinal parasites in Los Angeles, California

The results of parasitological examinations of stool samples collected over a 6-month period in 1975-76 from 493 out-patients at a hospital and 1350 at a medical centre in Los Angeles County, California, USA, were analyzed retrospectively. 19.7% and 25.1% respectively were infected with parasites. The protozoa found included Giardia lamblia (in 8.7 and 14.5%), Entamoeba histolytica (5.3 and 4.5%), Dientamoeba fragilis (2.8 and 2.2%), E. hartmanni (4.3 and 3.4%). E. coli (7.7 and 10.5%) and Endolimax nana (8.5 and 13.0%). The prevalence of pathogenic protozoa was considerably higher than in a previous survey (1936) in the Los Angeles area.
