48 ejaculates obtained from 6 bulls were used. Part ejaculates were diluted 1:2 in the Nagase-Niwa diluent and used as controls. The remaining volumes were diluted in the same diluent after it had been pasteurised in a water bath at 62 deg C for 45 min; streptomycin and penicillin (30 000 IU each) were added to 24 of the experimental samples. All samples were equilibrated, frozen to -196 deg C, and stored for 24 h. In the control samples and in the experimental samples without antibiotics and with the antibiotics resp., the post-thawing survival time of spermatozoa at 39 deg averaged 362, 346 and 120 min (CV=20, 21 and 30% resp.), the difference between the controls and samples without antibiotics being non-significant. Microbial count of the 2 types of experimental samples was highly significantly lower than that of the control samples.
