Deep-freezing of boar semen: a comparison of two methods

Semen samples from 4 Swiss Yorkshire boars were split and frozen in pellets by the method of Pursel and Johnson [see ABA 47, 5601] or in straws by the method of Westendorf, Richter and Treu [see ABA 44, 753]. Although laboratory tests on sperm morphology and motility indicated better results with the former method, insemination results were significantly better with the latter method (CR 73 vs. 58% and litter size 8.08 vs. 7.76). Sperm motility 5 h after thawing and incubation at 37 deg C was the most reliable guide to semen quality. Large differences were observed between boars in laboratory tests of semen quality.
