Deep freezing of boar sperma. Laboratory and insemination results using the Hülsenberger paillete method

110 ejaculates from 28 boars at the Hulsenberg AI Station were used. A series of pilot laboratory experiments was carried out on the deep-freezing of boar semen in straws and results are summarised in 8 tables. Best results (sperm motility and morphology) were obtained when Orvus-Es-Paste was added to the diluent and when semen was cooled to 5 deg C before being frozen.67 sows and gilts were inseminated with the contents of 2 straws, containing altogether 6 X 109 spermatozoa. In the 30 gilts and sows inseminated with semen diluted with 2 parts Hulsenberg-8 diluent and 1 part seminal plasma, 70% were found to be pregnant at slaughter, with an average of 9.9 foetuses; in the 37 animals inseminated with semen diluted in a saline diluent (Hulsenberg-81), corresponding results were 55% and 7.3 foetuses.
