Total cholesterol content in bull semen

Significant differences were found among breeds in the av. cholesterol content of their semen: Friesian, 230.89 mg%; Piedmont, 188.50; Charolais, 334.50. Significant differences were also found between the cholesterol contents of the semen and of the seminal plasma, the contents in the seminal plasma of the 3 breeds being 155.12, 154.00 and 243.00 mg% resp. The cholesterol content did not differ between 1st and 2nd ejaculates. The role of cholesterol in sperm metabolism and survival, especially on freezing, is discussed briefly.
