The effects of Ancylostoma caninum on the liver and lung of mice as shown by histochemical techniques

Mice were orally infected with about 2,000 Ancylostoma caninum larvae each, and their infected livers and lungs collected after 24 hours and 48 hours, respectively, and compared histochemically with those of uninfected controls. The penetration and migration of larvae through the liver caused breakdown of carbohydrate complexes and depletion of glycogen; the cytoplasmic RNA became more pyroninophilic and there was a probable increase of RNA, but the protein content seemed unaltered. Results of tests for lipids, pigments, connective tissue, amyloid, alkaline and acid phosphatase and hyaluronidase activity were inconclusive. No significant histochemical alteration to infected lung tissue was noted.
