Cattle were inoculated i/m with one three vaccines: viable culture, heat-killed culture, and formalin-killed culture. Sixteen cattle were each given 3 doses of vaccine at 14-day intervals. Virulent homologous M. bovis used as challenge inoculum became established in all of the controls, in 15 of the cattle vaccinated with heat-killed culture, in 13 of the cattle vaccinated with formalin-killed culture, and in 13 of the cattle vaccinated with viable culture. Keratoconjunctivitis developed in all 12 controls, 12 of the cattle vaccinated with heat-killed culture, 7 of the cattle vaccinated with formalin-killed culture, and 8 of the cattle vaccinated with viable culture. Hence the formalin-killed culture was as effective as live vaccine.
