The effects of Leishmania donovani lipophosphoglycan (LPG) on dog phagocyte functions were investigated. The chemotactic activity of peripheral monocytes and polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells was evaluated in terms of cellular polarization and the PMN cell respiratory burst was investigated by measuring superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide production. There were significant reductions in metabolic and chemotactic activities in LPG-preincubated cells, thus emphasizing the ability of this molecule to impair the canine phagocyte responses.
