The effect of heat shock on the relative hexokinase activity of promastigotes of Leishmania aethiopica and Leishmanina donovani was investigated. Promastigotes grown at room temperature (25.degree. C) were incubated for one to seven days at 37.degree. C. Eight to ten fold decrease in the relative hexokinase activity was observed with the promastigotes of L. aethiopica after two days and with L.donovani promastigotes after seven days of incubation. There appears to be a direct relation between reduction in hexokinase activity and change in shape to amastigotes like after incubation at 37.degree. C.
