After treatment of each of the 795 birds of the infected flock with 250 mg chloramphenicol daily for 6 days proved unsuccessful (although resistance tests indicated that the salmonella was sensitive), it was decided to cull the 114 clinically ill birds, bar the remainder from flying, clean the cotes daily and disinfect all quarters weekly. A high-protein pelleted ration (20% protein, reduced later to 16%) was fed, incorporating 0.04% furazolidone and 0.125% oxytetracycline (approx. 50 mg/bird daily), for three 10-day periods separated by 10-day intervals; a vitamin preparation was given on three days of each interval. The diet initially led to a brief watery diarrhoea among the birds, but 10 days after the start of the new diet salmonellae were isolated from collected droppings of only three of the 12 cotes. Apart from a further isolation one year later from a single cote no further shedding of salmonellae was detected over the subsequent two-year period.
