Various epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic problems of Salmonella typhimurium infection in infants and young children

Clinical analysis of 54 children aged from 1-36 mo. with intestinal infections caused by S. typhimurium was reported. The treated children were divided into groups: with acute diarrhea, with recurrent diarrhea, and without gastrointestinal signs (carriers). The course of the disease was particularly severe in children in the first 3 mo. of life. Chronic infections with recurrent diarrhea led to the development of secondary malabsorption syndrome. Difficulties in treatment of these infections were discussed. Eradication of highly resistant and variable of S. typhimurium in carriers was discussed.
