Reactive arthritis following Salmonella typhimurium infection

Two cases of aseptic arthritis following Salmonella infection are presented. A man aged 18 yr developed migrating joint symptoms particularly in the large joints of the lower limbs. The patient was incapacitated and, after 4 mo., still experienced symptoms from both knees. A woman aged 58 yr developed swelling and discoloration of the right knee 2 wk after an intestinal infection. The course was mild and the patient recovered completely after 2 mo. In both patients feces culture and the Widal reaction were positive. Fluid from the affected joints was sterile.
