Case control study of multiple-resistant Salmonella typhimurium DT104 infection of cattle in Great Britain

The main findings of a case controlled study of S. typhimurium DT104 infection in cattle which was carried out during 1994 and to the end of October 1995, to identify sources of infection, and to describe the epidemiology within herds, are presented. Although the epidemiology of the disease appears to be complex, a number of controllable risk factors are described. It is suggested that purchasing replacement stock from direct sources, quarantine of purchased cattle, housing sick animals in isolation, preventing wild bird access to feed stores and vaccination are likely to have the greatest impact on the reduction of disease due to multiple-resistant S. typhimurium DT104 in the cattle population.
