Haemagglutinating ability of Corynebacterium pyogenes strains isolated from domestic animals

C. pyogenes strains were isolated from 555 of 4,000 carcasses (14.1%) inspected at the Pecs slaughterhouse, 193 of them from organs of animals with septic infections. From these, 42 strains (20 from cattle and 22 from pigs, comprising 11 and 9 strains, respectively, from septic disease, the rest from local processes) producing zones of beta-haemolysis on anaerobic blood agar plates were studied in detail. In slide agglutination tests, two reactions were distinguished: type A reactions (large flakes precipitated immediately) were given with bovine, sheep, pig, g.pig and horse r.b.c. by 40, 38, 24, 18 and two strains, respectively; type B reactions (fine granules appearing after 1-2 minutes) by two, four, 18, 24 and 35 strains, respectively. None of four C. renale control strains gave agglutination reactions. Additional properties of the C. pyogenes strains were liquefaction of gelatin and Loffler's coagulated serum on opal-agar medium; clotting, acidification and peptinization of litmus milk; absence of urease and catalase activity; hydrolysis of starch.
