A survey of plasmids in the clinically isolated Shigella strains and their invasive ability and antibiotic resistances

Thirty clinically isolated Shigella strains were examined for their plasmids and their biological characters. Invasive ability was confirmed to be related to 140 or 120 megadalton (M) plasmids. Twenty-five to 70 M plasmids were found to be conjugates R plasmids. Small plasmids of 3.4, 2.6, 2.0 and 1.8 M were found to be well preserved in all strains despite of the different sources. The combinations of these plasmids were specific for species and serotypes and could be used for marker plasmids to identify species and serotypes.
