Identification of inter-district disparities in Rajasthan

The article attempts to identify and examine the relative backwardness of the various districts of Rajasthan using indices related to certain selective socioeconomic activities of agriculture, industry, road and transport, animal husbandry and social services sectors. 16 indicators associated with these activities are defined and used to trace relative levels of development/backwardness. For each of the indicators ranks are assigned to the performance of the districts. The study relates to the years 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981 depending upon the availability of data for a particular indicator. Alwar is the most developed district followed by Bundi, Bikaner, Barmer, Churu and Jaisalmer. Bharatpur, Alwar, Ganganagar, Kota and Jaipur have also done well in all the five sectors.
